What is MOLD?

Mold is a microorganism that occurs naturally in our environment. Many of the things that we take for granted are the result of mold, such as leaves decaying, composting and the development of antibiotics, including penicillin. The problem is that while some molds are helpful, others are toxic and can be harmful to our health and housing environment.

Mold is caused by moisture or water penetration left untreated If there has been water damage, plumbing leaks or flooding, mold could be hiding and you don't even know it.

Physical Factors: Modern construction methods that tightly seal homes and hold in moisture, can encourage mold growth. Many commonly used construction materials are good for mold to grow on (wood, drywall, insulation) Growing molds can threaten the structural integrity and finished surfaces of a home. Mold can literally "EAT" the house. About 35% of all properties suffer water infiltration each year.

Health Factors: Many of the thousands of common molds cause some people to experience allergy symptoms such as runny nose or wheezing. Some molds may cause more severe problems such as irritation of the lungs and fungal infections in persons with immune problems. A few highly toxic species can affect anyone, causing severe nerve and skin reactions, and even death.

Economic Factors: The value of a home can be decreased enormously by the threat of disease and structural damage by mold. Cleanup in severe cases can be very expensive.

RED FLAGS… that require testing:

  • Visible mold
  • Musty odor
  • Visible water damage/ stain
  • Poorly maintained HVAC system
  • Construction defects

Some mold problems are obvious because you can see it. In this case, swab testing should be done to determine the type of mold. Sometimes mold problems are not so obvious. Mold can be found underneath wallpaper and baseboards, behind walls, or the mold could be growing in areas you cannot see. Such as, the ducts of the heating/cooling system. In this case, the only way to know if mold spores are present is to conduct air sampling to detect the presence of these spores in the home.

Types of testing available: Swab, carpet sampling, air testing.
